TO PLAYERS, COACHES, AND PARENTS:

All I could say was “oh no” when the ball was hit towards Brian in left field. “Never any doubt Dad, he had it all the way!” These were the words I heard from the LITHYAA parents after Brian raised his glove and the fly ball fell smack into the pocket of the glove.

You see Brian rarely caught a ball. He was usually in right field or second base. A couple of times he got to pitch, which he really enjoyed. So when he caught that ball and the inning ended, he came back to the bench with the biggest smile on his face. He felt as proud as his teammates congratulated him. There were not many moments like this, but Brian always enjoyed being out there on the field, part of the team, and playing the game he loved, baseball.

The baseball fields at Sunset Park meant a lot to Brian, and they will always be special to my family and I. After Brian's passing I would come out to the field named in Brian's memory almost every week. No matter what the season I always made time for a short visit. I would feel a calming effect, a sense of peace as I gazed upon the baseball diamond, even when it was covered in snow. Especially after a difficult day, these fields were now my escape from life's issues, as they were for Brian. Now that the years have come and gone, I do not come to the fields as often as those first few years. However, those happy memories of Brian playing baseball on these fields will always have a place in my heart.

Thank you all so very much to the coaches, players, and parents for participating in this baseball tournament and a big “thank you” to the Lake in the Hills YAA for making this tournament possible every year. Laurie and I cannot express in word what this means to us to remember and celebrate Brian's life since he played in the YAA (2002 thru 2005). And please remember that the cost and time for participating in this tournament helps other children who are suffering with brain tumors and life threatening illnesses.

Let us all help so they may live.
